It started during COVID:
I was at the dentist in Leesburg the end of March 2020 just as COVID hit. I was leaving, a woman with two young children approached me saying she had been thrown out of her hotel room because of non-payment and was left with no possessions, just a small trash bag of cloths for her and her two children. The restaurant she worked for closed due to the virus and she was out of work. I took the family over to McDonalds and paid for their breakfast and then proceeded to take them to two homeless shelters in Leesburg, neither of which had any room for her and her two young children. They told me there were no homeless shelters in Leesburg that have any room, they were all full. I did pay for 1 night at the hotel and got her in touch with a local church that agreed to help. I finally got some help from “Come as you are” ministry which gives out free breakfast, lunch and where they could take free showers. A pastor from a local church and I paid for two nights hotel. I have no idea what happened to her but worried about it for weeks.
I got diagnosed with Cancer in July, 2020. Since then I’ve reevaluated my life and realized I’ve been having lots of fun here in the villages and have given little thought to giving back to the community who has blessed me so much. It’s time I give back in some way.

When Donna Francis met a family experiencing homelessness about this time last year in Leesburg, she set out to find a shelter that could take them in. Unfortunately, most shelters she came across were full.
“After that experience, I realized there are so many homeless (people) in Leesburg, especially at that time with so many people out of work,” Francis said.
Francis and her husband, Tim, will host a bi-monthly dance featuring performances by local musicians to raise money for local shelters and other charitable organizations.
Earlier this month, they raised about $500 for “Come As You Are Ministry” at the first dance, and as capacity opens further, she expects to be able to raise even more.
